unspoken reflections of my heart

I’m a connoisseur of art, a concoction of assorted interests, with a creative mind and an observant eye. An explorer by choice, I am a simple guy with rich tastes. I’m ever busy, read a lot, always at my witty best, and adore intelligence. Though I look reticent by chance, I talk a dozen to ten, if we share that bond. If you respect friendship, I will like thee. If you love music, you will love me.

My REM Entry
Mar 21st
At NITT, final years release a book, “REMINISCENCE”, which compiles the memories of four long years in college, the friends we met and the experiences we shared… The book contains a short article about every student of the batch, along with his/her interesting traits, characteristic features and contact details. We affectionately call it the “REM” book.
My friends wrote rem entries for me, and they were compiled by my friend and room-mate, Saurabh:
Karthik a.k.a Eskay is a GOLDen MAN with a tinge of SACcHarine that makes him an exponent of several disciplines and an extremely sweet and cordial person at heart. Perennially misinterpreted as a geek, Eskay is probably the best way “FUNDOO” can be defined. Someone who is glued to the Laptop “all night long” watching sitcoms but scores a 9 plus in every freaking semester. Give him the violin and you would feel the Gods around you for his hands on the violin are synonymous to MAGIC. A living proof of the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword” a touchdown of Eskay’s pen on paper has produced exquisite works of poetry and a demonstration of his love for detail and correlation. A flipside though are his PJs. A faint tingling of his PJ (mokkai) generating nerves sends gushes of laughter from this PJ-Centre. Beware, you might be found laughing on the floor after a discourse from this magnetic human being. Manufactured with a rare quality of charming people effortlessly, Eskay has a place in everyone’s heart. He is DESIGNed to be a hardworking and diligent worker, so much so that even SUNdays are LABorious with Eskay, though this frequently puts Mr. Perfectionist in some inexorable dilemma when it comes to relationships. All in all an all-rounder who is all set to strike it rich in Life!!!
Too much exaggeration, but still, I like it a lot !!
A Matter of Time
Mar 15th
It has just begun. It is beautiful. It is unusually different. It is exciting. It feels special. It is nice. It is sweet. It is happiness. It is lovely. It brings a smile. It will not change. It is just that!
It gives fear. It instils responsibility. It demands enormous patience. It is time-bound. It necessitates thinking. It needs a level-headed approach. It is not confirmed. It is not assurance. It should not change. It is an idea. It is a chance, a probability, in turn, a possibility. It is a wait. It is a penance of sorts. It is a test. It is life!
So now, it is all a matter of time. Patience.

Thyagaraja Aradhana ’10 @ NIT Trichy
Mar 8th
Thyagaraja Aradhana was back with a bang at NIT Trichy. The festival was celebrated on Sunday, 7th March at Barn Hall in our college.
Every year, the Thyagaraja Aradhana is organized by Amruthavarshini, The Carnatic Music Club of NIT Trichy. Various professional musicians from Trichy and Sri Rangam participate in the Aradhana, along with students and faculty of the college. The Pancharatna kritis are sung in the same style as is done at Tiruvaiyaru. This year, the entire programme was organized in a flawless manner, with complete dedication and devotion.
The event started at around 9 am. Initially, the students rendered kritis composed by Saint Thyagaraja. We then proceeded with the recital of the vedas. The artistes, led by Shri T.K.V. Ramanujacharyulu, arrived at around 10 am. We then proceeded with the rendition of the songs.
The first song was SriGanapathini [Sourashtram - Adi]. This song was followed by Gurulekha Etuvanti [Gowrimanohari - Adi]. Then we rendered the five Pancharatna Kritis in order:
- Jagadanandakaraka (Naatai)
- Dudukugala Nanne (Goulai)
- Saadhinchane (Arabhi)
- Kanakanaruchira (Varali)
- Endaro Mahanubhavulu ( SriRaagam)
After the rendition, Sulochana Madam, faculty advisor of Amruthavarshini, honoured the guests. Then, lunch was served for the artistes. After lunch, the rendition of Thyagaraja kritis continued, this time, rendered by the artistes.
Amruthavarshini’s flagship event – Thyagaraja Aradhana ’10 was a grand success.

Feel So Low
Feb 25th
So see how long I can last
You can pretend that I don’t exist for you
And I can laugh about it now
But I hated every minute
I was waiting for your email
And each day that you forgot to call
Just made me feel so low
So low
Christmas 1998
I tried to call
I just couldn’t wait
And your message was out of date
So I left my voice on your machine
But you did not respond
OK OK OK you’ve won
You make me feel so low
So low
A song that moved me very much.

Cloud 20/20 Paper Presentation Contest – Third Place !!
Feb 17th
It was a fantastic day at Bangalore. The Grand Finale of UNISYS Cloud 20/20 Technical Paper Presentation Contest was held at ITC Hotel yesterday. I was one of the finalists and I presented my paper on cloud computing to an audience of 400, which comprised of eminent personalities and stalwarts from the industry. I won the Third Place and was awarded a Nokia N97 mobile phone !!
It all started mid-November. A friend of mine, Venki, informed me about this contest on cloud computing. I went through the details and thought I could put some effort into it. I was not new to Cloud Computing since I had already conducted workshop on that topic in college. I got into action and learnt more about the topic and the challenges faced by this new computing paradigm. I decided to work on application development on the cloud. I came up with a topic: “Realizing Parallelism and Transparency in Applications Through Idempotence”. Wrote an abstract, submitted it, and waited for the results.
I was one among the sixty students shortlisted for the technical paper round. I had about a month to work on my technical paper. I browsed various papers and articles on the topic. Read about the current trends and what kind of applications cloud computing can expect in the future. I thus came up with a pretty decent technical paper, stating the problems and solutions. even though I did not have much hope of getting through to the next round, I eagerly awaited the results.
One evening I got a call telling that I am through to the telephone interview round. This news made me prepare myself well for the interview due to happen the next day. The telephone interview did not go well, since I was literally running and gasping for breath when my phone rang. I could not answer properly, even though I knew the answers. At the end of the day, I had lost all hopes.
But it was a pleasant surprise to see my name listed as one of the six finalists. I had to prepare a presentation for the finals. I worked a lot on it and prepared the slides. I flew to Bangalore and stayed at HM Suites, an excellent place.
The final round was on 15th. I met the other finalists. We got to know each other and became good friends. We had to present our paper to a panel of judges. The panel included eminent geniuses, Bob Supnik (CTO, UNISYS), Dr. Michael Salsburg (Chief Architect, UNISYS) and others. We all were a bit nervous. But the finals went on really well. Results were not announced until the next morning.
The Cloud 20/20 Grand Finale was a fabulous event. A lot of people from UNISYS, HP, Oracle, etc had been present. The entire day was packed with events, seminars and presentations. We were given a chance to present our papers to the audience, and the experience was really great. We were awarded the prizes by Bob Supnik. Deepak from IIIT-B won the first prize, an Apple Macbook Air Laptop. The second place was won by Kiran from IIIT-H, who got a Sony Vaio Laptop. I won the Third Place.
There was also a media event where the media was briefed about the entire event. Our names, I believe, appeared in quite a few papers. But I could get hold of Deccan Chronicle only.
Overall, it was a really great experience. And this was my first technical paper presentation. All thanks to UNISYS for organizing this event successfully and providing me an opportunity to explore more into the world of cloud computing.
Engineer vs. Mathematician
Feb 11th
A thought-provoking short story narrated by my professor in class:
An engineer and a mathematician were asked a question:
“Given a stove, lighter, water and an empty vessel, how would you make hot water?”
Both, the engineer and the mathematician gave the same answer:
- Fill the vessel with water
- Light the stove
- Place the vessel on the stove and allow it to heat.
Now the question was slightly twisted:
“The stove is already lighted and the vessel already contains water. Now, how would you make hot water?“
The engineer answered, “This is dumb. Just place the vessel on the stove and allow it to heat.”
The mathematician answered:
- Empty the vessel by pouring the water out.
- Switch off the stove.
- Now the problem is reduced to a sub-problem, the solution to which was previously calculated.
Now, are you an engineer or a mathematician ???
